Digitalization of Freight Transport Documents - deadline August, 2025

2024 11 11

On July 15, 2020, the European Parliament approved Regulation (EU) 2020/1056 on electronic freight transport information (eFTI). The aim of this regulation is to accelerate the digitalization of freight transport documents by creating an electronic platform where the private sector and supervisory authorities can exchange the necessary information.
Implementation Deadlines:
  • August 21, 2024: By this date, the European Commission must adopt the technical specifications required for eFTI platforms.
  • August 21, 2025: From this date, all relevant authorities must accept electronically provided information through certified eFTI platforms.
This regulation will help reduce administrative costs, increase the efficiency and sustainability of freight transport, and speed up roadside inspections.
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Regulation
Advantages:
  • Reduction of Administrative Costs: The digital information exchange system reduces the use of paper documents, thereby lowering administrative costs.
  • Efficiency and Sustainability: The electronic system increases the efficiency and sustainability of freight transport by enabling faster and more accurate information exchange.
  • Faster Inspections: Digital information allows for quicker roadside inspections, as the information is easily accessible and verifiable.
  • Interoperability: The regulation ensures that all relevant authorities accept electronically provided information through certified platforms.
  • Environmental Protection: Reducing the use of paper documents decreases the negative impact on the environment.
Disadvantages:
  • Initial Investments: Companies may need to invest in new technologies and training to use eFTI platforms.
  • Technological Challenges: There may be issues with the interoperability of different systems and data protection.
  • Transition Period Difficulties: Transitioning from paper documents to digital ones may cause temporary difficulties and disruptions.
  • Dependence on Technology: Failures in electronic systems can cause operational disruptions.
These advantages and disadvantages help to understand how the regulation may affect the freight transport sector and the challenges that may arise in implementing these innovations.
