From December 1, 2024, Lithuania will introduce mandatory advance registration of all freight vehicles departing from Lithuania through the European Union (EU) external border into an electronic queue. This new regulation aims to manage truck queues at border control points and ensure public order at the Lithuanian border.
Advantages:
- Queue Reduction: Advance registration will help reduce the length of live queues at border control points, especially during major holidays when queues can reach up to 23 kilometers.
- Improved Security: This measure will help improve overall security at the borders with Belarus and Russia by reducing the concentration of vehicles in border areas.
- More Efficient Traffic Management: Electronic registration will allow better forecasting of truck flows and planning of routes and delivery times.
- Customs Control Efficiency: Advance registration will help properly plan customs officers' resources for declarations and cargo inspections, thus increasing the throughput of customs posts.
Disadvantages:
- Initial Investments: Companies may need to invest in new technologies and training to use the electronic registration system.
- Technological Challenges: There may be issues with the system's operation, especially if vehicles arrive without advance registration.
- Transition Period Difficulties: Transitioning to the new system may cause temporary difficulties and disruptions until all participants adapt to the new system.
This new regulation aims to improve logistics processes and ensure smoother movement of goods through the Lithuanian border, but it also requires certain investments and adaptation from the transport sector participants.
